About Statin Side Effects

statin side effectsIn general, statins are drugs used to reduce and control the cholesterol level in human body. They block or slow down the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, a process that has an important significance towards the production of cholesterol in the liver.

Since statins reduce the cholesterol level in the body, they are drugs usually recommended to prevent or manage cardiovascular diseases. Some of them are obtained synthetically, some of the statins are fermentation-derived. But regardless of the obtaining process, statin side effects are basically the same.

In the section below, I’m going to put into view the general statin side effects, and then also present other adverse effects related to medication with statins.

General Statin Side Effects

There are five most common side effects associated with the consumption of statins. These statin side effects are:

1. Muscle problems. These problems that may occur due to medication with statins can be mild or severe. The mild impact muscle statin side effects are:

– muscle pain and muscle cramps;
– myositis – condition that can be characterized as the inflammation of muscles. In case of medication with statins, patients usually experience inflammation of the leg muscles;
– myopathy – a muscular disease which has as main symptom a general muscular weakness, due to the improper function of the muscle fibers.

One of the most severe statin side effects regarding the muscles is rhabdomyolisis. In this case, skeletal muscle tissue is damaged, broken down and the damaged muscle cells are passed into the bloodstream, which can result in severe kidney damage or renal failure.

2. Diabetes 2. Various statins can favor an increase of sugar blood level, which increases the risk for the patient to develop diabetes type 2. That’s why if you’re a patient with high glycemia problems, or there’s a diabetes 2 history in your family, it’s best to tell your doctor, before taking any of the drugs in the statins class.

3. Gastrointestinal problems. Among the common digestive tract adverse effects that may occur due to medication with statins are: diarrhea or constipation, dyspepsia, nausea or stomach pains.

4. Neurological problems. Although studies on this matter are rather inconsistent, statin side effects like memory loss, confusion, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis could be linked to the intake of various statins.

5. Liver damage. Like many drugs, statins may cause severe liver problems due to the fact that they augment the enzymes that help the digestion. Therefore, enzyme disbalance and derangements may occur. However, these problems are rare, but in any case, if any symptoms related to liver damage occur, like yellow skin, yellow eyes or dark-colored urine, it’s best that you should seek immediate medical help.

Of course, patients that undergo a treatment with statins may develop allergic side effects, like skin rashes and itchiness, edema, tongue-swelling or breathing problems and anaphylaxis.

Other Statin Side Effects

Now, these are the general statin side effects. Here are some of the adverse effects that may occur, apart from the ones mentioned here, on patients under medication with statins: insomnia, headaches, chest pain, problems of the respiratory tracts (sinusitis, rhinitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis), urinary tract infection. Most of these problems have been experienced by patients under medication with atorvastatin.
