Simvastatin Side Effects – Muscle Pain

Muscle PainSimvastatin is one of the most prescribed drugs by physicians for the reduction of cholesterol and, indirectly, for the prevention of heart disease or to reduce the risk or heart attacks. From the statins group, simvastatin is one of the drugs with a low incidence of side effects. However, that doesn’t mean simvastatin side effects are inexistent.

If medicated correctly, simvastatin side effects are usually of mild nature. Most patients that experience simvastatin side effects, confront themselves with nausea, diarrhea or constipation, abdominal pain, or a general state of weakness. Although it’s not one of the most common simvastatin side effects, muscle pain can also occur in patients on medication with this drug. Muscle pain is one of the first signs that the medication with simvastatin should be ceased. And I will expand on this matter in the paragraphs below.

Normally, in small doses, from 5 mg to 40 mg, there is quite a low chance for patients to develop muscular problems. These side effects are usually associated with high and prolonged treatment with this drug, in doses of 80 mg per day or more. Although 80 mg should be the maximum dose of simvastatin administered to a patient, if the physician considers it’s the case, and the patient doesn’t experience any side effects, in some cases, even higher doses can be administered.

However, if as one of the simvastatin side effects, muscle pain occurs, this is a sign that the medication with this drug should be stopped. Myopathy is a muscular disease, one of the simvastatin side effects characterized through muscle pain, muscle stiffness and spasms, and a general state of muscle weakness. Although its rate of incidence is rather low if the treatment is followed correctly, it can still happen and if any of the symptoms mentioned occur, the patient should seek immediate medical attention. That’s because this condition can lead to rhabdomyolysis, a life-threatening condition characterized through the break down of the skeletal muscle, and the passing of the break down products into the blood. Some of those break down products, especially myoglobin, are really harmful to the kidneys and can lead to kidney failure.

The symptoms of rhabdomyolysis are severe muscle pain, confusion, vomiting and if the kidneys are failing, brown-colored urine.

Now, to avoid as much as possible simvastatin side effects, muscle pain and rhabdomyolysis, it’s important to take this drug as prescribed. In case you have forgotten to take a pill, do not take two or three next time to compensate. And in case any of the side effects occur, seek medical attention immediately.
